Australia
Australia requires all international students on a Student Visa (subclass 500) to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Germany
Germany requires all students to have health insurance. Choose between public (GKV) and private coverage.
Spain
Spain requires international students to have valid health insurance for visa applications and NIE registration.
the USA
No universal healthcare in the USA. Most universities mandate Student Health Insurance Plans (SHIP) for F-1/J-1 visa students.
Austria
Mandatory student insurance: Join ÖGK for €69.98/month or use private insurance. EU students can use EHIC.
Belgium
All residents must register with a mutualité/ziekenfonds. Students pay heavily subsidized rates: €0–€20/month.
Croatia
Very affordable! HZZO student rate ~€15/month or private from €20/month. EU students can use EHIC for free access.
Denmark
Get CPR number and yellow health card for free healthcare. EU students can use EHIC. Optional private insurance for extras.
the Czech Republic
Non-EU students need Czech commercial insurance (CZK 7,000–13,000/year ≈ €280–520). EU students can use EHIC.
Finland
Degree students use FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service) for €36.80/semester. Non-EU need private insurance for residence permit.
France
All students register with French Social Security (Sécurité Sociale) for free. Top-up mutuelle recommended for full coverage.
Greece
EU students use EHIC for free ESY access. Non-EU students need affordable private insurance from €15/month.
Ireland
Non-EU students MUST have private health insurance for visa (€200–€500/year). EU students can use EHIC for HSE access.
Hungary
Stipendium Hungaricum students: free coverage. Self-funded students: insurance from HUF 15,000/month (~€38). EU students can use EHIC.
Italy
Non-EU students can register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN) for €149.77/year or use private insurance.
the Netherlands
Complex but manageable: Dutch basic insurance required if working >16h/week. Otherwise, international student insurance accepted.
Norway
Register with Norwegian National Insurance (Folketrygden) for free healthcare. Non-EU students need valid insurance before arrival.
Poland
Very affordable! NFZ voluntary insurance ~€13/month or private from €15/month. EU students can use EHIC.
Portugal
Register with SNS (Portuguese National Health Service) for mostly free care. Small co-pays €4–€18. Optional private from €25/month.
Romania
Extremely affordable! CNAS public insurance ~€20/month or private from €10/month. EU students can use EHIC.
Sweden
EU students with EHIC covered. Non-EU students staying >1 year register with Försäkringskassan. Shorter stays need private insurance.
Switzerland
Swiss health insurance is mandatory for all residents within 3 months. Student plans from CHF 80–250/month. EU students may apply for exemption.
the UK
Access the NHS by paying the Immigration Health Surcharge. Optional private insurance for faster access and extra coverage.
